During the time of its operation, Black Mountain College was thought to be a Communist-leaning institution. This thesis explores how and why the College came to be feared as Communist. This fear came on a statewide, local, federal, and even internal level and was due to the institution’s structure, its focus on art, certain individuals who worked there, and its stance on racial equality.
